This year's International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) kicks off for the press tomorrow night. While we've traditionally seen a lot of "connected" and "smart home" talk at the CEDIA Expo (Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association), never have we seen this much talk about smart home technology–outside of the media room that is–at CES. Everyone from appliance makers to startups to alarm companies to traditional consumer electronics manufacturers are getting in on the action, with the most recent announcement tonight coming from Samsung.

Samsung Smart Home–a totally new brand for the company–is a service that lets you control and manage your home devices through a single application (kinda like SmartThings), which is just what the doctor ordered. We've reported before on the need for smart home/Internet of things companies to make it easier for the user to control disparate home devices. Having to open separate apps for every single connected device is just plain silly. Even better, Samsung's new Smart Home Software protocol will supposedly work with not only Samsung electronics and appliances, but also with non-Samsung products. From what we can tell in the release, Samsung will have to collaborate with third-party partners to make the Smart Home service compatible with the software, so don't get too excited that everything from your Nest to your Phillips Hue to your Sony TV are going to all magically work together just yet. Ninja Sphere is also doing something similar, but it's open source, which means more flexibility for the homeowner.

 To be rolled out across Samsung devices and appliances in the first half of 2014, that is until more third-party peeps come onboard. The solution will provide three main services: Device Control lets you control your devices from your mobile device or Smart TV from anywhere in the world. Simple enough. You can also use voice control on any GALAXY Gear device to do one or a series of functions. "Going out," for example, will turn off home lighting and selected appliances. Home View lets you view your home via built-in appliance cameras. We are not sure why you'd want to see your home from, say, your washer/dryer, but we assume that this will all become more clear tomorrow or the next day when we see it in action. Finally, Smart Customer Service notifies you when it's time for service. It will also help those techs who come to your house to fix your fridge or TV to diagnose problems.

Samsung plans to expand the Smart Home service to cover home-energy, secure home access, healthcare, and eco home applications through the partnerships with third-party service providers in these markets, "helping foster joint commercial opportunities and grow the connected home service marketplace."

We're all for manufacturers being friends. Let's hope it's all-inclusive!
