Microsoft might have a new partner on the Windows Phone front.

Sony is considering launching a Windows Phone handset in mid-2014, The Information reported on Tuesday, citing a person who claims to have knowledge of the company's plans.

If true, the surprising move could send shock waves through the mobile space. Over the last several years, Sony has been exclusively developing Android-based devices. This would be the first time the company would get into the Windows Phone space.

According to The Information, which requires a paid subscription, Microsoft is also trying to woo other handset makers and has cut software-licensing fees to aid in those efforts.

CNET has contacted Sony for comment. We will update this story when we have more information.
