Motorola has dropped the off-contract price of its flagship Moto X smartphone to $399, permanently.
"We've been hearing a lot recently from people who want a new premium smartphone at a reasonable price without having to wait for a contract upgrade," Rick Osterloh, Motorola's senior vice president of product management, wrote in a blog post. "That came through especially loud and clear during our holiday flash sales."
During that sale, the off-contract Moto X was $349, but a glitch prevented consumers from buying the device, forcing Motorola to reschedule the sale.
"So from today forward we're offering Moto X at an everyday starting price of just $399 on any major US carrier, without a contract. This includes customized devices," he said.
With a two-year contract through Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint, the Moto X is $99.99. The 32GB developer edition is $449.99 (down from $549), while a bamboo back can be added for another $100.
The Moto X hit shelves in August, marking Motorola's first major smartphone release after the Google acquisition. The flagship phone sports a 4.7-inch, 1,280-by-720 display with 316 pixels per inch, as well as 10-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing cam.
Initially, the on-contract Moto X sold for $199, but Motorola dropped the price by $100 in October. Customization options via the Moto Maker site were also only available for AT&T at launch, but that opened to the other carriers in November.
Now running Android 4.4 KitKat, the handset boasts a 24-hour battery life, or 13 hours of talk time, via its 220mAh battery.
